Arab Silence in Response to Ahmadinejad's Remarks

The West has shown an impressive display of shock and disgust in response to Ahmadinejad's remarks yesterday that the Holocaust is a myth. But as reported here, the silence from the Arab world has been deafening. "While official Arab reaction in such cases is usually slower than international reaction, any issue involving a defense of Israel is a thorny one for Arab governments, who risk appearing to side with Israel against a Muslim nation."

Why is an admission that the Holocaust actually occurred and that millions of Jews actually were killed sixty years ago in any way perceived to be an appearance of siding with Israel? What kind of courage is required for a moderate Muslim leader to say that simple truth?

The Arab silence is disgraceful, but not surprising. The civilized world MUST side with Israel. It's time to face the truth: Israel is the only democracy in the region, the only state that recognizes human rights to its citizens. And, if Israel decides to launch a military strike against Iranian nuclear capabilities, it should be applauded by the international community, not blamed, condemned, or ostracized. Israel would have rendered the world a great service, as it did in 1981 when it destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor. What has to happen for people to stand up to Islamofascism? Another Holocaust? Another 9/11?

Firstly the silence from the Arab world is disgraceful but, given the ordinary run of politics, possibly not surprising. How unpopular would a domestic leader make himself if he said anything that might even appear to constitute siding with Israel even though it is a mere statement of truth?? This silence is as reprehensibly as Ahmadinejad's revisionism.

However Fernando Teson are you serious in that post?? Israel recognising human rights? What about Palestinians?? What about 'the wall'? What about ghettoisation and persecution, the destruction of civil society in Palestinian areas, the first UN recognisedr genocide in Shambron and Shatila?? Let's not kid ourselves into creating angels and devils, civilized and barbarians, in this discourse. There's a drop of each in all. Mediating the mixture is the most important thing, although preferably through UN Security Council resolutions and not unilateral Israeli action.
